Cornelia has a few difficulties:  when she chooses to talk--she stutters, she is poor, she has been put in classes inappropriate for her learning level and her mother leaves her with her very strange older great-aunt whom she has never met before.  This is a coming of age story and Cornelia has things to sort out in order to move on and grow up.

Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix Series:  The Missing Thirteen-year-olds Jonah and Chip, who are both adopted, learn they were discovered on a plane that appeared out of nowhere, full of babies with no adults on board.  They realize that they have uncovered a mystery.  They come to believe the mystery involves time travel, and maybe they'll have to do something to fix things! I have a friend who has avidly read all the books in the series and really liked them.  I, on the other hand, had no desire to pick up the second book.  Lots of kids at Hadley like them!  You have to decide for yourself on this one. The Return of Skeleton Man by Joseph Bruchac

I enjoy a sequel to a good book! The protagonist in this story thinks sequels are lame, but has to write it because her monster DOES come back. Bruchac is great at weaving Native American stories and history into his narration. The book is set in a real, historic place. The Last Apprentice Series by Joseph Delaney The first book in the series, Revenge of the Witch , introduces Thomas Ward.  Tom is a 13 year old seventh son of a seventh son.  That makes him sensitive to supernatural stuff.  At thirteen, he is apprenticed to an employer to learn a trade.  One brother stayed home to run the farm and the others went to learn a trade like blacksmith or masonry. Thomas becomes apprentice to the local Spook.  The Spook is the person in the county who deals with the supernatural--witches, ghosts, boggarts and worse.  Tom enters his apprenticeship and after several weeks of training, Mr Gregory, the Spook, is away and business and Tom must face a dangerous boggart on his own.  It was just such a creature that killed the last Spook's apprentice! There are 13 books in this series!
